Frequently asked questions

Everything about playing Animal Crossing online: the GameCube original, right in your browser.

Do I need the game file to play Animal Crossing online?

Yes. Animal Crossing Online runs a faithful port of the original GameCube game, but it can't include the game's copyrighted data. You supply your own GameCube disc image (a .ciso, .iso, or .gcm file) of a copy you own. You load it once and it's cached in your browser, and it never leaves your device.

Is it free to play?

Yes, it's completely free. An optional free account adds cloud saves so your town follows you across devices.

Is this an emulator?

Not in the usual sense. It's a native port of the game's code compiled to WebAssembly, not a GameCube emulator running a ROM of the whole console. That makes it lighter and faster than emulating a GameCube in the browser.

Does it work on mobile, iPhone, or iPad?

Yes. The game runs in any modern browser, and on phones and tablets you get touch controls (a directional pad plus A, B, and Start buttons). You can also add it to your home screen and play it like an app.

What controls can I use?

A keyboard (WASD to move, Space for A, Shift for B, Enter for Start, arrow keys for the camera, and more), a connected gamepad or controller, or touch controls on mobile.

How do saves work? Can I import a save from Dolphin?

Sign in for cloud saves that sync across devices. The port is compatible with Dolphin emulator saves, so you can import an existing town or export yours to keep playing elsewhere.

Does my game file get uploaded anywhere?

No. Your disc image is stored locally in your browser and is never uploaded to our servers.

Can I play with other people?

Multiplayer (server hosted lobbies and town visits between players) is on the roadmap. The full single player game and cloud saves are available now.

Is Animal Crossing Online affiliated with Nintendo?

No. It's a community fan project, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Nintendo. All trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
